Counting down his days as President of the United States of America, and his last few days as tenant of the White House, Donald Trump is rushing to implement a string of federal executions.
“This is really outside the norm, in a pretty extreme way,” said Ngozi Ndulue, director of research at the non-partisan Death Penalty Information Center.
Five executions will take place before President-elect Joe Biden takes over from Trump after inauguration on 20 January 2021. Trump’s Federal killings breaks a 130-year-old record precedent, of executions during a presidential transition.
If all of Mr Trump’s five federal killings take place, that makes him America’s “most prolific execution president in more than a century, overseeing the executions of 13 death row inmates since July of this year”, (BBC News).
“The five executions began this week, starting with convicted killer 40-year-old Brandon Bernard who was put to death at a penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana. The execution of 56-year-old Alfred Bourgeois will take place on the evening of 11 December”. (BBC News).
